| Precious Baby Goat |
My (Haylee's) goat, Liesel, was put into the birthing stall a couple weeks or so ago. She seemed to be showing a few signs. We waited and waited. We have a guessing game where we like to guess when the baby/babies are going to be born, what color eyes/fur, how many, boy or girl, etc. We had to keep changing our date estimates..we were beginning to wonder if she would even deliver in February!
Finally, a few mornings ago, (February 26th), Naomi came in from chores and said that Liesel had refused her food, had a little string of goo coming out of her vulva, and her udder was very full.
We knew she would probably give birth very soon, but we hoped she would deliver during the day so we wouldn't have to miss out on sleep!
We went about our day, eating meals, having bible time, clean-up jobs, schoolwork, and reading books together. Around 5:30 pm., Naomi went out to start on her chores. I was just starting to look for a good recipe for meatloaf for dinner, when Naomi came running in.
"Guys, didn't you hear me on the monitor? Liesel is having a baby!"She rushed outside, and Mommy and I hurried to find our boots and coats and run outside. Liesel was standing in the birthing stall, pushing. She already had pushed out part of the head and a little hoof! We quickly put gloves on and went into the stall with disposable pads.
It seemed like the baby was having a little trouble coming out, so when Liesel pushed, we gently pulled on the baby to help it come out. The baby's head came out, then it's shoulders, and then most of it's body. It was kind of funny seeing most of the baby hanging out of the mommy (with us supporting it). We were coaching Liesel to "just push the rest of the baby out"!
At last, she pushed the baby out, and we caught it. Naomi and I dried it out and brought the baby to the mother to lick. Naomi looked at the baby goat and announced, "It's a boy!"

| 2 of "the midwives" :) |
He is so cute! He is totally white, with blue eyes, and lamancha type ears. He looks almost an image of his mother except for the ears :) He is doing well..nursing okay with a helpful push towards the mother. We still have to decide on his name..probably will be from the movie "Sound of Music".
